CHRIS rCnUROH, Saturday. Mknsks. Rollebton ami Mitchelson received a deputation from the unemployed woiking men in the City Council Chambcis to night. They -were addicssed by the Mayor and Messrs. Montgomery, Holmes, Wynn Williams, and White, w ho strongly urged the necessity of finding immediate work. The manied men unemployed lepresent 12.34 persons in destitute. The Ministers said they would consider what could be done and let the Mayor know on Monday. A large crowd of men remained outside waiting the result, but they were very orderly. The Ministets leave Chnstchurch to-day. Monday. Anniversary day was kept as a general holiday. There weie Caledonian games at Launceston Park, and popular sports at Hagley Park. There was a railway excursion to the Timaru and Amberley races. There was the opening of the Industrial Exhibition, and a trip by steamer to AUaroa, All were well patronised, and the weather was lovely.

WELLINGTON, Saturday. A notice in the Gazette proclaims Alexandra to be in the county of Waipa. Monday. This afternoon the district coroner held an inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of a newly-born infant daughter of one Kate Boyle, the discovery of whish in an out-house was reported on Saturday. The medical testimony proved that around the neck of the child there was a thick piece of rag tightly tied with a double knot. The mouth was tightly plugged with a piece of wet rag. The umbilical cord was about five inches long, and not tied. The body was pale, bnt not discoloured. The right side and back of the head were discoloured and bruised, and the skull was' crushed into small pieces. The lungs had the appearance of complete | inflation, and there was no doubt the child was born alive. Any of the injuries mentioned above were sufficient to have caused death. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder agaiust Kate Boyle. The amount of property tax paid throughout the colony, up to Saturday night amounted to £'245,000, which in within £500 of the Treasurer's estimate.
