WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In reply to the Chamber of Commerce, Christclmreh, re the missing crew of the Sarah W. Hunt, tlie Government state that the Stella cannot he spared, as it would seriously delay the work in connection with the lighthouse at Wai pa pa Point, a\ Inch is to be ready by the Ist of •Januaiy. They are also of opinion that ifthect"\v levelled either Campbell or Auckland Inlands they would suffer no privations, as a supply of provisions and clothing is stoied on each of the islands, If the crew did not reach either of the ishnds a search would be perfectly useless. There is no land to which they might be blown, and the chance of finding them alive would be .small indeed. Mr Rolleston is, however, awaiting a full report from Christchurch, and it is probable that on the return of the schooner Reketo from the Auckland Islands she may be ordered to make a search. It is alleged that the men weie sealing. It was quite illegal, as the present is a close . season. JJ* The amount of the property tax col™ lected up to to-day has increased to £100,000. The farmers on the West Coast are complaining of the boisterous weather experienced, and say if it cor.tiuttes much . longer it will be useless to cut a large ' portion of the crops. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. This afteihoon the formal presentation of a bust of Garibaldi (subscribed for by 137 Italians) to the Museum was made by Mr A. Cracroft Wilson, Consul for Italy, in presence of a number of Italians. Dr Yon Haast, curator of the Museum, acknowledged the presentation. Wednesday. The Waihouranga Estate, South Can* terbury, consisting of 18,990 acres freehold, and 1748 acres leasehold (14 years from May 14th, 1879), was sold to Mr John Holmes, M.H.R., for £82,500. The following team will represent Canterbury in the forthcoming match against Auckland : — Messrs Secretan, Milton, Cotterill, Barnes, Dudney, Edser, Chapman, Harwin, Pocock, Buchanan and Wilding.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday. George Scott, a miner, died suddenly yesterday on the Kawara river in the Lake County. It is Delivered death resulted from the effects of a fight he had with his mate, a man named Thompson, some days before. Thompson having made contradictory statements, has been taken into custody by the police. An inquest will be held. Wednesday. 3H The Tongariro was at the Heads at 9^ o'clock last night. She made the passage in 42 days, 1 hour, actual steaming two days less. She reports all well. She is drawing 20£ feet of water.
