CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN BOARD.

A special meeting of the above body was held at the town board office, Cambridge, on Monday evening. : There were present : Messrs TV Wells (chairman), R. Kirkwood, Jno. Fisher, and J,. P. Campbell. The minutesof the previous meeting were read and confirmed. SURHENDKUING OP ALLOTMENTS. — The following communication was received from Mr E Hewitt :— To iHu Chairman and MmuiußS of thk Domain Hoard. Gi'-Nir.i'MKN, — I h.ive the honour to request to be kind cnoug-h to accept the surrender of my Umsc of the following domain lands, viz: Nos 27 and 23, Cambridge E.ist, and Nos. 79, 91, •md 92, Cambridge West. Hoping to receive a favourable reply, I am, &c. E. Hewitt. Mr (t. F. Hoiking, lessee of allotments Nor>. 32 and 37, wrote informing the board these hections were under water, and that he. had caiefully calculated the cost of draining the same. He respectfully asked the board to undei take the work of drainage at a cost of £117 5s 7d, or to accept a surrender of the lease of the said sections. Both communications were considered together. —Mr Kirkwood contended that on leasing the&o allotments the lessees knew very well what the land was like, and what it was worth. He thought that those people who were able to pay should be made to pay. Mr Hewitt was quite able to pay, and he should bs kept up to the terms of his lease. He considered that those whose sections were under water should get a little consideration ; but that those whose sections were dry and cultivable should be made to lefcain possession. — Mr Campbell thought thib was a bad piinciple, ns lessees whose land was covered with furze or ti-tree might demand equal consideration.— Mr ]<\hher did not think that the board should contribute the whole of the cost of draining Mr Hosking's land. He would suggest that they should let him have the sections rent free for a certain period. — Mr Campbell would not be adverse to a general s herne of drainage affecting the respective allotments of a number of lessees. — Mr Kirkwood was in favour of accepting the surrender in Mr Hosking's case, as it was hard to tell where a scheme of drainage like that suggested would end. — It was ultimately agreed that, regarding the accepting of the surrendei of the sections in both cases, the board could not see its way to accept the same except in cases of bankruptcy. Asto giving Mr Hoskiug pecuniary assistance to enable him to drain his allotments, the following resolution was unanimously adopted :-" That this board is willing, in cases where allotments require to be drained before they can be profitably utilised, to contiibute all the necessary pipes, provided that the applicants for assistance cause suitable plans of the proposed drainage schemes to be prepared and for warded to the board, and their consent obtained thereto ; the boaid, however, declining to accept any responsibility in regaid to any damage that may be caused to the land of adjoining proprietors by the canying out of .such works. Fukzk on Road. — A communication was received from the Pukekura Road Board, requesting the board to clear the furze from the fiont of certain domain allotments at Cambridge West. — The allotments referred to were those of defaulting leaseholders. — Home discussion ensued as to ■\\ hethei oi not the domain boaid was the piopui paity t«> take in hand the dealing of the furze. — The Chairman contended that the boaid was not lesponsible. — It was ultimately agreed that the boaid .should undertake the work of clearing the furze off the road where c miplahmd ot, Mr Fisher being i equested to undertake to have the work done. Financial. -The Chairman stated that the boaid had aciedit balance at the bank of -£l3-1 J4t. Oue a( Hie uusiahars Ictaciuically lemarked that it was the hrst public body lie ever had been connected with that had a credit balance at the bank. This terminated the business.
