Two well known chief*, Hitiri and Whaio, wcie sent by Rewi and Wahanui to interview such of the Ngatiraukawas as were disinclined to agiee to the survey of the land, and bring them to a proper understanding. The interview took place at Aoteuoi, and was entirely successful, they having agieed to what has been done at the late meeting with Mr Bryce. Whitipatato, formerly a strong suppmter of the king movement, gave his consent and support to tho^e in favoui of the survey. Mr Grace, at the request of Rewi and Wiihanui, has written to Wetero To Kerenga at Mokau, requesting him to be here for the next meeting with Mr Bryce, which is expected to take place about the 17th of this month. Tawbiao purposes holding a meeting at Whatiwhaitihoe some time in March nevt. It is expected to be his Last meeting. Doubtless as ho finds his mana slipping from him he will abdicate, and retire into private life in the bosom of his family. The f a,rce of 1 egal authority io noai ly over, and though he was to a veiy great extent king only in name, he must feel the slight put ijpnn him by the other big chiefs in opening the country without even consulting him. Hi.s playing at royalty has cost the colony large sums a>f money, and the colonists .should be thankful to Mr Bryce for having put a stop for all time to such useless expenditure. The next useless and costly institution to be abolished is the native officer, and the sooner that is done the better it will be for the pockets of the taxpayer. — (Own Correspondent. )
