Appointment of Ranger. r>jome little diHCussion took place on this question, Mr Waaher being of opinon that it would be moie to the interest of hettlers to abolish cattle Fees. He contended that theie was not much Government land and any advantage to be gained by grazing cattle on the urn should be free. Other members of the Board thought it desirablf to contiuue the practice of appointing a ranger or leasing ithe run, not only as a moans of revenue, but as a protectionto residents in the district, as if no ranger were appointed there would be nothing to prevent c.ittle from other districts being driven here, it was also desirable as a means of preventing the running of entire cattle by natives, or others. It was ultimately decided to call for lenders, either foi the lease of run or to acfc as 1 anger, to be in by Wednesday, August 31st. — It A\as resolved that Mr Fitzpatriek be empowered to get the necessary repairs made to road near Hook's Bridge.— The secretary was ordered to communicate with the District Engineer, calling his attention to the way in which the approaches to the bridge over the Waipa at Whatawhata ttiave puuk, rendering it unsafe for wheeled traffic, and requesting him to cause necessary steps to be taken to repair same. —lt was also resolved that an application bo made to the chairman of the Raglan County Council for a return of all monies paid by that body to ihe "Waipa County on account of that portion of the Newcastle District situated in Haglan County.
A orfat catastrophe occured recently at the Zoological Gardens. There is there an elephant who eafcs buns out of your hat. Lord Northbrook, who had heard of this bought a bun, pat ifc in his hat, and gracefully presented the dish to tho elephant. But unluckily this happened to be the wrong eiflphaofc, and one whoso education has been neglected— for he took the hat and bun together, handed fchem into his capacious mouth, and munched them contentedly amid tho inextinguishable laughter of the onlookers. Lord Northbrook haa not yet recovered from the ef » fects of this laughter, and I strongly rocommend everybody to desist asking him "How about the elephant ?"— Ywlty Fair. (
