THE CAMBRIDGE POLICE,

TO THE EDITOR. Sir. — Were anything required to prove your statements regarding the Cambridge police you have it in the letter signed 8.8.8., which appeared in the Mail, March 30th. The writer cooly says he was furnished with his facts by his friends, the natives. How I ask did they know Constable Brennan was so anxious for a full investigation of the whole affair, how did they know of the alleged expression of thanks made by Palmer to the said Constable ? The same may be applied to all the truthful 8.8.8. has advanced. I am of opinion that the letter was written if not by most certainly for the police, and the party who wrote it was supplied with the so-called "faots "by the police, who' thus seek to' creep out of the pretty fix their very energetic efforts in the interests of justice have got them into. There are many cases ou record here in Cambridge which would look even worse for them if properly investigated than the two you have so properly called attention to ; but if the instances you have made so public serve to procure the absence from our township of our worthy Constable, few outside his own strict circle with regret his departure. I may add that not one hundred miles from our township a house has recently been opened in which it is asserted that a most extraordinary business is carried on, yet no one thinks of informing the local Constable of it aa they believe he is aware of it himself, (at least he should be,} and that if they ware to furnish such information aa would compel him to act, the proprietor would receive the hint ,to have all things prepared for a police visit' and that in audition the njtrne of the informant would be furnished to the party ix\ pharge.— I am &0., Observes.
