NEW WHARF A T CAMBRIDGE.
The erection of the Steam Navigation Company's lift at Cambridge is proceeding satisfactorily. The inside row of piles for constructing a wharf at the foot of the bank has been driven, and although when completed, the wharf will not be more than ten or twelve feet broad ; a depth of from twelve to fourteen feet of water will be got. The stream at this place is well suited for swinging the steamer. That itself will be a great convenience, serious damage having from time to time been sustained by the paddle-floats getting into contact with the rocks opposite the present landing place. At the top of the bank a foundation has been excavated, on which a large two-storey building will be erected for storage purposes. Both storeys will be so arranged in connection with the conterminous banks that drays will be enabled to back up to them, thereby saving a great deal of trouble in loading. When completed the lift will be a great convenience to the traffic, and from what we can see from its present incomplete state, the whole arrangement will reflect much credit on the Company's enterprise.
