CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC DOMAIN.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In ycirs of June 3 is a letter ir&n J. P. Campbell enclosing one from H. J.- H. Elliott, Undersecretary for Crown Land. Now I, as a ratepayer of the Pukekura Highway Board, do not look upon the proposed domain with favor, for this reason, that any person who may lease these lands for a term of 21 years will naturally take all out of them he can; the improvements will be such as to last that time and no longer. If possible the rent of such land will be quite swallowed up by surveys, legal and clerical expenses, &c, and, when let, each separate allotment will require a road at the expense of the Pukekura Highway, who obtain no benefit by these lots except the current rate, whereas if this land was sold out in 10-acre lots, or even smaller, many of those small holders who are banished out of Cambridge with their cattle could buy and become permanent settlers (I am referring only to thelandin the Pukekura Highway), and each would know that whatever improvement he made it was his own or his heirs after him. The Pukekura Highway would also get 20 per cent, of land fund to assist to make the roads with, the said roads would be made with greater cheerfulness in consequence, and each person would know he had a home for ever. This is a matter that should be well thought over, as the roads will be very expensive, —I am, &c, PUKEEURA*
