HAMILTON WEST SCHOOL.

A meeting of the West Hamilton School Committee was held yesterday : Present : Mr. Gwyne, chairman, and Messrs Knox, McLernon, Gr Edgecumbe, and Yon Stunner. The following letter from the teacher was received: — Hamilton, 21st Feb. 1880. R. Gw'y.vk, Esq. Chairman, Hamilton AVest •School Committee. Dear Sir, — I beg to acknowledge copy of further resolution of Committee. I regret that my reply to previous letter was unsatisfastory. The simple facts are these, Mrs Calder called at the school on the forenoon of the day in question and informed me that the funeral would take place at 4 p.m. That lady also asked if I were agreeable that two of my daughters should assist at the funeral ; if I would ascertain if two other school girls would volunteer to assist also, and if I would intimate the luncral to the children ; to all which I assented, as acts of common courtesy i to .1 fellow tc.icher. Ihe question was not put to the children whether they would go or not, nor was a show of hands taken ; except for the two volunteers I did make the request, which was withdrawn and not taken as I desired that all should be allowed to do as their parents desired. In the afternoon Mr Knot called and informed me that the Committee strongly objected to Mrs Caldcr's visiting the schoolroom about the mat-

tor. I then informed him that he had made the intimation to tho children. The school was dismissed at the usual hour. Iha\e to express regret that my previous letter should be deemed discourteous, as if so, it was unintentional on my part. — I ha\ c, &c, J. M. Murray, Hamilton West School. The following letter was ordered to be sent to the teacher: — Hamilton, Feb. 23rd. _ Resohcd that Mr Murray's letter of explanation re the request from this Committee be accepted, and further th.it this Committee wish it to be understood that no outside interference will be allowed in respect ot the school, but if the children .ire required for any public demonstration due notice will be given by the Committee. This concluded the business.
