THE WAIPA ELECTION.

Messrs J. B. Whyte and F. A. Whitaker are now the Bepresentafives m Parliament of the Waikato and Waipa constituencies, and without m any way detracting from tho merits of the defeated candidates, -we cannot but congratulate the electors on haviug secured the services of two thoroughly independent members, who will be pnxious and determined to carry out the Literal measures at present before the colony — representatives of the colony m the broad sense of the term, but, at the same time, zealous workers, hand m hand, for the special interests of Waikato. In the election of yosterday, as m that of Friday last, the successful candi-, date may fairly claim to be the representative of the entire district, and not of any particular section of it or party. 0"t of the ten polling places enumerated below, Mr Whitaker carritid a -najority at eight of tbem ; and has, moreover, been returned, taking the unofficially declared figures as correct, by a majority of votes over the whole of the votes polled by the other three candidates, nearly three-fourths of the electors on the roll having gone to the poll. We may also congratulate the inhabitants of the district on the extreme good nature, and the orderly manner m which a very keen contest, with a strong underlying, current of feeling on either side, has been fought out. Of course, iv any such election, it cannot have been otherwise than that some hard things have been, said on either side, and some momentary feeling of bitterness excited ; but now that the election is over, and the battle bas been foaght out, and the strength of parties settled, we feel sure that even the most zealous partisans of the several candidates will bnry policical differences at the official desiaration of the poll to-day. The following are the results at the several polling places : — Mercer — Whitaker, 43 ; Cunningham, 32 ; McMinn, 1 ; IJoche, 0, Ngaruawahia — Wiiitaker, 45 ; Cunningham, 27 ; McMinn, 1 ; Boche, 1.
