WAIKATO-TARANAKI RAILWAY.
We publish below the draft of a | manorial & r presentation to the i. Minister for Fablic Works, now being signed in Auckland and the suburbs, urging on the Government the desirability of immediately carrying forward the ponstructiotifof the Waikato - Taranaki Railway. A similar memorial if taken round the Waikato settlements would receive a very largo number of signatures. ; The project,, jrecom. raenda itself to every right thinking man in the community as one of the very utmost importance and value, a practical result of recent negotiations .which would reconcile the colony to much that is most objec- ( tionable in the {concessions to the I natives proposed by the Government, i I The following is the memorial, which is being numerously signed, and we recommend to the notice of the Chairmen of our local governing bodies the desirability of preparing a. similar one for subscription in Waikato :—r- ■-.■■. To the Hon. the Minister for Public Works. — The memorial of the undersigned residents of the city and suburbs of Auckland alieweth — That your memorialists are resident in the city and suburbs of Auckland, and are desirous of urging upon the Government the great importance of immediate action being taken to secure the construction of the proposed line of railway between Te Awamutu and Taranaki. That this proposed line is a most important' part of North Island trunk line. TJiat it would ruin through native land, /the owners of which' have been ho3tile to' the Queen' h authorities, to the great hinderance of the pece and prosperity of the adjacent European districts. The construction of this line Tvould have a very important influence for good on these natives. They would be
drawn into closer relationship with Europeans, and this land, instead of remaining unproductive, would probably shortly be under cultivation, and a large and prosperous European population be settled thereupon.
