WAIPA COUNTY AND THE ACT.
Sifc, I—lt1 — It appears the action of the Waipa County Council, at their last meeting at Ohaupo, in passing a resolution in favor of hringiug .the Counties Act into f oroe, has caused a revolution right through the county. The people "of the Newcastle Biding are now up in arms aguinst the action of the Council on that occasion, and are taking stejhL.to bring all legitimate pressure in their power to bear on their councillor to prevent tho bringing of the Act into force. A requisition is now in course of signature, requesting Councillor Fitzpiitrick to call a public meeting of the ratepayers of the Newcastle Biding to disouss tho question, so that they may have an opportunity of, in a more formal way, expressing their disapproval of adopting the Act. The ratepayers of this ridingfeel disappointed and much annoyed to find that their councillor should have been misled and induced to give his consent to the bringing of the Act into force by what would appear a serious mistake ou the' part of the secretary of the Waipa County Council, in some of his correspondence with Councillor Fitzpatricfc as to
adopting the Act. On July 26 bit, at th< annual meeting of the ratepayer* .of th< Patrick then read a letter, wlujhtojarf ne had received from Councillor Mandeno, of t£ different tiding* were m favor^of doing so with the exception of the councilor the iN^custleßidmg. Itwa« arirued by some that, as all the other ridings in the county were in favor of adopting the Act, it would be useless for the Newcastle Riding to oppose it alone However, as it was, a large number of the ratepayers refused to accord their support to the Idea. Now, sir, it would appear by the report of the last meeting of the Council at Ohaupo that the statement made in Councillor Mandeno s letter to Councillor Fitzpatrick— as to all the councillors being in favor of adopting the Act —could not be correct, as two of the councillors at that meeting voted : against ths resolution, which would not have been carried had Councillor Fitzpatrick alao voted against it. No doubt, the mistake referred to on the part of Councillor Mandeno may have been accidental, but, nevertheless, it had the effect of misleading the councillor for the Newcastle Biding, and was the cause of his voting . for the resolution. Hence, the vigorous agitation of the Newcastle people. — I am, &c, A Corhespondbnt. Newcastle, August 19, 1878.
