MELANCHOLY DEATH.
Our readers will observe with regret the obituary notice of Miss Chapman, a sister of the wife of Mr Pearce of the Commercial Hotel, Hamilton. The occurrence has quite cast a gloom over the township, as much from the melancholy character of the bereavement as from the respect m which Mr and Mrs Pearce are generally held. Miss Chapman had been staying for some time past on a visit with her married sister m Hamilton. At the same house lodged a young man, a member of tbe composing staff of this journal, who was stricken down with heart disease the result of rheumatism, and whose case was considered almost hopeless by tbe doctors. Though a comparative stranger to the family, every care and attention was paid to him, and one of the most assiduous m this good work was Miss Chapman. Continued watching and attendance on the sick man produced a state of nervous excitement, but when Miss Chapman came into tbe room on Thursday last, and found the patient black m the face strangling himself with the pillow strings torn from the pillows, the shock was so great that after rescuing the unfortunate youth from the consequences of his act she was seized with a violent nervous paroxysm and was carried to ber room utterly prostrated. Brain fever set m and despite the unremitting care and attention of her family, and the efforts of (he medical man, Dv Beale, the young lady died early yesterday morning; The deceased young young lady who was much esteemed for her cheerful and amiable disposition, was tbe only unmarried daughter of Mrs Chapman of Auckland, who was also on a visit with her to the Commercial and was therefore able to soothe the last moments of deceased and remained to console her other afflicted daughter. The -emains will be forwarded this morning to Auckland for burial.
