CAMBRIDGE AND HAMILTON RIVER TRAFFIC.
Sta,— l think the time has fully arrived when the settlers of Hamilton and Cambridge should place a steamer of their own . on the river, between the two Cambridge. It will be some time before j there is a branch line of railway from 1 Cambridge, connecting either with the present railway or the projected Thames* Waikato line; and, till then (probably two years or more), a boat between the two places named would pay handsomely, and, at $he same time, be an inestimable boon to the settlers of this district, as the {>rice of freight might be reduced tc jShe oweßt profitable cost to tthe owners.. What I propose is — that the settlers should form a joint stock company, and either purchase or charter a suitable boat, running her at such times and at such rates of freight — both for goods and passengers — as would really give Cambridge some advantage out of the Auckland, and Ohaupo Railway, as at present constructed. Such an undertaking could not but be a most profitable one. It would command local support, and there is ample trade enough to make such support remunerative. Trusting that the suggestion, once thrown out, will be taken up by practical hands, and carried to a successful issue, — I am etc., Psosucxvo Shttlm. Cambridge, Feb. 23, 1878.
