Harvesting- is still, being busily carried on m the Waikato. About Cambridge, most of the farmers are m the thick of it. A large amount of grain has been got m, but still there is much to cut. Mr Parr's reaper and binder has been constantly engaged, and has given great satisfaction. The best crop known as yet m the WaiWaikato is that of Mr Allwiil, of Tamahere, twenty-five acres of which were cut on Friday and Saturday. It ia expected to yield more-* than forty, bußhels to the acre. • The Pube Bbed vHebefoeds purchased for Messrs Maclean and Co., by Mr. W. Payne, at the Colac sale, New South Wales* whose pedigree we gave m our issue of the 29th ult., arrived m Auckland by the ' Hero '• on Tuesday. Mr Payne also brought over a yearling bull and a tieiferj the^roduce of Mr Reynold's Tocal. •Herd. Four' animals from the Mount Deerimut Herd, bred by Mr Bean were also -brought over-in the 'Hero,' namely Lord Warden 2nd, Rapid Bay, Senator and Dictator. Majob Dbjjmmoni - ) Hay, we learn, has just returned to Cambridge from up country, He had been taking surveyors to survey the Kokoko Block, about forty -five miles from Cambridge. On the surveyors proceeding with their work, a number of Hauhaus attempted to seize the instrument, and anodier party of natives took the part of the surveyors. A fracas ensued, m which the Hauhaus got possession of the legs of the instrument, out three of them got broken ribs into the bargain. Then, according to the Major's account, as the instrument was of 'no use without the legs, he let them have that too. However, he seems to think nothing of the affair, and that m a short time all differences will be settled. The Annual Parish Meeting of St. Peter's Hamilton, was held . yesterday evening m the church before choir practice. The meeting was well attended, i and, m opening it, the Chairman — the j Rev. .Mr Calder — congratulated the congratulated the congregation on the increased number of church members. Messrs Vialou and Gandin were eleoted parsons and parish churchwardens respectively, and Messrs Hunt, C. C. Wood, Laishley, • Sandes, Coates^ and Hume, were elected vestrymen, and Messrs G-wynne, and N. R. Cox, auditors. Before the meeting closed, a handsome gold watch and chain was presented to Miss Kate "Vialou by the Rev. Mr Calder, On behalf of the congregation, i acknowledgement of her services m playing the harmonium at Divine Service during the past three years. Mr Vialou returned thanks feelingly on behalf of. his daughter. A vote of thanks to the choir was also passed, and to the out-going officers of the church. The Election of the fibst Mayob Of Hamilton, which took place on Tuesday, caused more excitement m the town tljan any election which has yet been held there; The partisans of either candidate were busily working throughout the day, and even the ballot did not altogether take away from tho exciting- calculations of whether this one or that one was" ahead. It soon became evident, however, that Mr W. Cumming was out of the running, and indeed toward the latter part of the day, by his directions,, his friends asked those who had intended to vote for him to turn over their votes to Mr Vialju, which may account m some measure for the exceedingly low number Mr Cumming polled, net even the eighth of the winning candidates number, wliich was necessary to secure the return of his £10 deposit. During the early part of the day a large proportion of Mr Potter's supporters recorded their votes, but this only had the effect of making Mr Vialou' s working committee work all the harder, and between 4 o'olock and 5 o'clock that gentlemen polled more votes than ever recorded m any previous hour during the day. Shortly after 6 p.m. the poll was declared Vialou 90, Potter 72, Cumming S, informal votes 3, and. the first named gentleman was declared .duly elected. In lie evening a barrellof beer was broached ippositfe the Hamilton Hotel, and all ami .undry afforded the opportunity of irinking his Worslrp,s health. For a ' drst election everything worked smooth ly [ tnough. There were a few inaccuracies | n the"bij.rgess..ligt, as might have been jxppctt'd, but these were overruled by the ■ J «»tuniiug Officer, whose po^4*e enable *-** so uvm to the amendment vj i?m to v -Hosbther.of a burgess's he omission ...
