The Commercial Hotel, Hamilton West, has been taken over from its late proprietor, Mr W. Walker, by Mr W. H. Pearce. Mr Pearce is well known to the public both of the Thames and Auckland as the landlord of the Wharf Hotel at the former, and of the Royal Mail Hotel at the latter place, and m both cases has made a large number of friends and considerable business connection. The Commercial Hotel, Hamilton, is one of the finest Hotels m the colony, and has every requisite for tho comfort and convenience of the travelling public. The Colobado Beetle. — Mr R M. Sunley, Nelson, is suspicious that this bugbear of a bug haa found a habitation m that neighborhood. Some seasons ago j he used various manures to his small crop, | and he notices that the plants to which he applied guano, drooped and died. In a letter to the ' Colonist ' he says : — ' lat first attributed this to then 1 having got too strong a dose, but upon closer inspection I found the stalks, especially at the top, to be covered with a sort of beetle that l had never before seen, m various stages of growth. They were marked and shaped quite like the models, and when cruehod emitted a most offensive odour ; but Ido not think any that I saw were so largo aa the biggest model. In a very short time every potato m the row was covered with them, so I dug them all up and threw them to the pigs. The tubers were about one-third grown, and appeared soft and flabby. The thing had nearly escaped my memory, and it is only reading the accounts of the Colorado beetle of late that has brought it to my mind.'
