Tho following memorial to the Premier 13 bein£ largely signed :—": — " Wo, the underpinned inhabitants of Invercargill and neighbourhood, h-iving heurd that aeveuteen of the Otago nii'inbers of the House of Ropresentatires haftf requested tho Government to proclaim the whole of Oiaa;o a single County, beg respectfully to represent that such a step would be detrimental in the highest degree to the inteie>ts of tho Southland district, tho commercial centre of which is Invercar gill, anil ita shipping port, tho Bluff; and we earnestly h <pc that the Government will oppose to I lie utmost this mischievous proposal, the result of which would be to entail upon this district, for an indefinue p nod of time, nil the worst evils from which it has hithrrto suffered under tho system of Provincil Centralism, and from which we hope wo are now about to escnpe under tho promised systoinofreal looul self-government, which, jour memorialists understand, the Government desire to substitute for the Provincial 'rtgiiue.' " Upwards of 700 signatures were ai ponded in two hours.
