DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.
Sir,— Sine* the GorerHnaent hare stepped the cutting of timber on tko pufclio lands, or only allowing it by a license, Jsplittera and aawyera have turned tkeir attention to private property, and many an absentee owner — wko thints ha lias a valuable bush on kis land — will find it stripped of every bit of good ti rotor. £cisg (he owner of some land iv the Pirongia ran**, I went to have a look round, and I find HMPb cut, saw-pi t« built, and all the arailable tre"ef disappearing in a wholesale way, and tkii is off private property, and doae by men wko call themselves respectable. Sone of the fifty acre blocks have not a g-od tree left on them. Now if tho owners were living near, no one would think of stealing their timber, bat because they are away it seems to be considered a lawful spoil. I think if tb« Mitler* would follew out a certain rule about doing to your neighbour! as ye would that they ahould do to you, it would seem more like Christians. The Governmint are buying up all the land they^ean f«t o«
the west bunk of the Waipa, and I think the 'best plan for all owners of bush land (that is absentee one*) is U sell it to thorn, as in a few years there will be but very little, good trmbefr^tt it, wfcere they can get a dray or a sleigh <lo &U Jf you can find space for the abott^ you will oblige, as I think the practice ekduld 'be put a •top to. —l am, &c , Kiwt.
