HAMILTON WEST LAKE RESERVE
Scr, — I am glad to see by your issue of Saturday last, Ibat the Bottlers of Hamilton We»t hare awoke to the necessity of endeavouring to prevent Ihe alienation of any more of the lake reserve, and to secure ir for the me of the town. From the report of the public meeting held for this pur. o-so, as given in jour paper above referred to, I find it, stated thai a plan was shewn which proved that the portion of the land surrounding the lake and now occupied by Mr Cox was never a portion of the town belt and reserve. I am prepared to pro re that not only the poition of this land lately fenced in Ac, by Mr CuX, but aUo that upon which hia house stands and tome Ihing like twenty two acres besides, was origmiilij part of the tow a belt. If Mr Cox has no land originally within and also part ot the town common, for what doe* the Town Board rate him ? especially il t+i« plau or map submitted. I* the meeting be correct ? lam able to say that ihe la»t portion fenced in by Mr Cox was bought by Mr Williamson, although put up tor sale, that gentleman refusing to give the upset price of £5 per acre. I am luriher able to say mat a te«* days after the sale another gentleman offered £7 per acre for the same lot of land, but was tola it could not be sold as " Dr Pollen had promised it to Mr Williamson as coropwisauon f>r some water -nice running through some land belonging to this latter gentleman at Coromandel. I know further th,jt some three y<ars ago the KemhmjU who offered the £7 per acre fur tins lot referred to, was told " that it could not be soid, it being a portion of the town belt, the Government wouid not alienate any of the land upon the town side of the lake— that Mr Wil iamson had applied font aiKi was reiu-ed." Then Mr Williamson tried to lease it but did not succeed although his ■ pphcuti»n was strongly »upported by the then General Government a»«euu 6o you see M • Editor that the remarks made by Mr iungsley were correct, and the map submitted to the meeting was incorrect, it not beiug the original map of the township furnished to the Board at the time the town was made a separate district. If air, jouo' any of your readers interested will get the large in >p ot the district and trace ihe boundary ot the township as given in the Provincial Government ••Guzaetie," No. 24, dated July 26, 1871, which 1 give below, he wil i and what I state to be correct, and if any one wi«n#s further to prove it, he will find the General Goveminent authority to tha ihen fluperuittfnnent, iv i ho So peno tendon t's offl-«, or Judge Gillies woyll exoNin Ertr of. of *'ttn**r»*" -ff.'*r«.i t\
