Information reached town of the drowning of Walter Campbell, employed at Bells flour mill on the 12th instant, by falling out of a car.Oß in which he was returning to Churchill with* some Maoris, The City Council fixed the Mayor's salary today at £150 per annum. Mr Quick's steamer for the Waikato river wa§ launched to-day at Onehunga amid general -rejoicings and champagne. Mr J C Firth writes a long letter to the * Star' in reply to Macandrew'a pamphlet, in which he declares that the coming struggle will be for one Colony and one Revenue, and that Canterbury and Otago will no longer be able to keep their land revenues, William Morrin's tale of land at Whangario and Mangonui sold for fiye shillings per aero. Messrs Hugh Carlton »nd Boylaa are expectod to contest for Eden with A X Taylor. Napieb. It ia reported as probable that Sir George Grey will attend a meeting of Pakawai natives on the 22nd to be elected a cadidate for the East Coast Maori electoral district.
