In vcply to Sir 0. "Wilson, the Premier said the San JL'Yancisco Mail steamer was detained in San Francisco until arrangements were made for releasing her out of the hands of the bailiff. Tho Government wanted to discoxirage any attempt to renew a temporary contract with New South Wales, as there was every probability that arrangements would be made with the builders of the new steamers ordered by Mr Forbe3. The AgentGeneral had been instructed io send all mails via Suez.
RESIGNATION OF THE, GOVERNOR. In reply to the Hon Mr Stafford, the Premier said the sole reason for His Excellency's resignation was because he was desirous to lead at home a more active life than that of responsible Governor of a constitutional colony. The chief portion of this afternoon was taken u,p with hearing the claim for compenbation by Messrs Williams and Yon Stunner, and Messrs Home and Jervis for losses sustained in connection with their duties as J. P.'s. A number of membors opposed the claim, on the ground that many people ran after the honor of J. P-, arid should be made liable for responsibilities of office,, if not properly able to perform them. The Division on'the motion was 49 against 12. Subsequently the amendment of the Premier was carried," c!n the understanding that the Government would inquire into the cause during the recess and report upon the same next session.
