in the Legislative Council, to-daj, a petition was presented from H»wke's Bay, pr*ying that no new Land Commission be appointed, and that ordinary Courts of Jaw should deal with native lanus, The petition was not re ceived. It accused Mr Russell and Mr Sheeban of inciting the natives to resist the land purchase and repudiate engagements. Colonel Brett moved that the Speaker request Mr Kussell to take his place in Council, and defend himself against the attack. The motion was postponed till Tuesday. Mr Sewell spoke strongly against the Council being elected on the same basis as the House. He advocated ft being elected by Provincial Councils.
