mOH OPR OWN CORItESPONDKNT. Honk ti: Oxk has received a telegram from Mr Mackay informing lam that he and Te Wheoro will shortly visit them. They nrc very antioiuly looking forward to their arriral. One of the Alexandra panic-makers has been visiting this district for tho last week, trying his best to frighten some of the out-pettlers, by telling them that it is to be war to the knife. I hope the settlers will have the good sense not to listen to his stories, but exercise their own common sense in believing as much of them &9 they deem fit, as his sensational communications to your Auckland contemporaries are well known. Tho Luna paid us a visit on her wav up to Manukau, on Friday last ; she had on botrd 30 Constabulary for "Waikato Hetaraka Nero, of the Xgatihourua tribe, a friendly chief, died on Monday evening, from rheumatir fever apparently, but natives heresav that he has been bewitched by Purukutu for going to ask Tawhiao to hand him over to tho Government. Iletaraka, I believe, did go to Kuiti, and it was on his return from there that he caught this severe cold, which caused him to bo brought over hero on a stretcher a fen days ago, and has now terminated in liia d "ith. Our « liter only put in an appearance last Saturday after one month's absence. A little opposition would, perhaps, make her more regular. The excitement amongst the natives here is apparently subsiding.
(from another correspondent) On Friday lust the Luna came in on her way to Manukau, and, having landed Major Campbell, proceeded on her voyage. The pheasants in the vicinity of the township have suffered severely from this gentleman's visit, 41 brace being the result of about two days' sport. This thinning of the pheasants is a matter of great congratulation to the natives, for the birds destroy a great deal of their crops. The Luna was to have returned for Major Campbell, but has not yet made her appearance. No native news. Hetaraka Nero died on Monday, to the last convinced that the powers of witchcraft were strong ou him — refusing to take the medicine prescribed for him by I)r Harsant. Hetaraka was a clever man, and has for years been a native assessor. Since the death of of Wiremu Nero, Hefcaraka has been the leading chief of the Ngatihourun tribe.
