To the Editor oftlu' Waikvto Tmiks. Silt, — In reforonco to an artirlo la tlic Iki'dy Southsm Crow of the 26th instant, respecting the murder of Timothy Sullivan, I beg you w ill give space for the following, as a flat contradiction that the murder was the result of a quarrel between my men and some natives, I beg to state, m reference to the first attack made upon the man Lanoy, and to which the Cross refers, that there has been no qu.irrpl whatever botween any of my men and natives. As the article I refor to is sure to lead to a misapprehension of this air.nr, I brg you to give space in your first issue for the above. — I am, sir, yours, fee, X B. Walkiui. Moanavale, Cambridge, April 30th, 1873.
(To tbo Editor of the Waikato Timb-,.) Sir, — The New Zealand Herald of 30th April, commcntinc;on its Waikato telegram, says: — "The settlers of the Waikato district arc described as indignant. They were to have held a meeting yesterday at Ivuiti, but the weather w as b.itl, and no meeting took place. The indignation could not have been very intense when a little rain was considered sulliciont for the settlors to remain in their homesteads." The editor, or whoever wrote the above paragraph, evidently knows nothing nboufc tho matter. No Waikato acttlers were likely to meet at Kuiti, which is in the hctirl of tin* Maori Kind's wnntry. Moreover, the telegium docs not sny a word about a meeting of the settlers. It is as follows : — " Ft h expected a meeting announced fo be held to-day will I)" poMponed in consequence of bad weather. " IW.bi.io and party were at Oruluri last night. " There w ill be little done at tho meeting till ho arrives." It would be as well if the Herald were to take the trouble 1o re.id c.irefully and understand its telegrams before it indulges in a gratuitous sneer at the WaiLato settlers. \W niM'il m>t be atonished at (lie ignoiance of New Ze.vlimil orPinis di-pl.ned m Knglinil, >rlu>n, ujion wLiitugenowilly supposed to be ono of the leadiug newspapers of the pro\ nice, can make »uch a gross miitnke. — Yours, &c., A Waikvio Suciitcu. \\'d\\m, Ma,) 1, 1873.
(To the Editor of the Wuii \to Timks ) Slit,— ln tlio JD. S. Cross of the 21th u!t. there appeared a loiter signed " Resident at Hamilon." This letter ovineed an amoune of mendacity rather surprising. " Resident" to the account ot the punt for the purpose of p\citin<* nublic accuses me with publishing rx parte statements in reference feeling against the Hamilton West Town Board. I may state that, -,o far from its boing necessary to " get up" ill-feeling, tlicie is scared} a intcpnjcr in the district who doe 9 not disapprove of the action they havo takon in tho above mntter. Ab regards the squatter* on the wharf not pa> ing district rates, sonio of thorn pay as much in rates m' one year as " Resident "is likely to do in hi* Hfe-timev Tl»o punt, it is slated, was ups,i>t by mismanagement ; the occurrence was purely accidental. Instead of applying to tho losseo's sureties to bring back tho punt, application should have been jnade to the lessee. Tins lie win perfectly willing to do ;in fact ho did all he was able in the matter. I reprat that the le^ce was ordered oIF the punt by the Chairman of the Bonrd. Thoro was a public; meeting of Ratepayers on the 17Mi instant, Captain Bet'U 1 in Hie thinr, and resolutions were pnswd condemning tlio 13oanl, and I led certain Unit " Itesident " was sent tliere by the Chairman of (lie JJonrd to tiiko notes and watch over the inteic<t-> ol (lie Hoard generally. Tim auretics §o far from hrning (nV'l to onde then- rerponmbility, had, nt tlic time " iiesideut" wrotw, paid ,fc2f> to llm Board. Tliere will be great dil!icnll\ in Idling the punt for (he lu-xt period, so tlinl ii ' il leqnence djunigu has been done to the district. - I tini, iVc, Vebuas.
To the Kiii'wol the Wai km o Times. Rnt, — In reply to your remarks at tlie foot of my letter of tlu- 2>st inst. (m your issue oi the 22ud), legal proceedings pending with regatd to t lie ca*e referred to prevented me then pointing out the errors made by you. And as reference i- made to the same subject b\ your correspondent in the Waikauo Tjius of the 2Ath inst , 1 will comply with botli jo ir and his request, defending the action of the Board, in publishing fact 1 ' nnd particulars, upon your disclosing his imiiM?.— l am, (Le , TnOMAS FARItKTiTi, Chairinauw Hamdton.
