The Waikato Times. "OMNE SOLUM FORTI PATRIA." THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 1873.
The Rev. F. C. Lbul will bold divine service at 7 o'clock p.m. at the Nguruawahia church on Sunday next. His K\.collcucy the Governor Sir George Anicy, the Hoa Julius Vo,'el, the Hon D. McLean, Lieut. -Colonel St. John, and Captain Machcll, left the Manukau for Wellington by the Luna on Monday. The larks lately imported by the ship Durham havo been purchased b\ the Acclimatisation Soc.ety nud Mr Thomas Jliß.oll. That gentleman intends hbn.itmg thoui at his farm, the Tah. Two moro probable vacancies in the House of Representatives are lively to tale place. Mr llallenslem, member lor Wakitipu, is reported n-. hkel) to resign his beat ; also Mr llichardson, member foe Nelson suburbs. Should these %.ic.uicies occur there will be three to fill, the third being th.it oi Mr Calder, Lite member for Imercargdl, The body of a m.vi, much decomposed, waa found on Tup-sday floating oil the Queen street wharf, Auckl.uid. It w.is that of a middle-aged man about 5 feet '2 inches m height. Tho features weio eaten away, and therefore aflo°rded no clue for identification. He had on a brown twoe.l coat and trousora and a Crimean blurt. The body was conveyed to the devd-hou.se, aw.utmg .m inquest. It is auppoai' I to have been in the water a week. Our telegraphic column'! solve tho mystery. We have received the following letter from a correspondent signing himself " Parishioner." We insert it aa we are unubletogivo a satisfactory answer, and publicity may have the effect of eliciting one :— " Can un> of the TiMUa readers inform mo why a levy of live shillings is made on every clergyman (other than our own), who olllciates in the parish j church here ? I believe the church was built at tho c ipenso of all clcnoiainatiom-i It surely cannot be the Church commit'ee's doing ; if so, would it not be well for them to resign, and appoint another. It is, I think, a greivons wrong, and ought to be remedied,— and the sooner the better, in the Cluu eh interest." On Tuesday, tho 22nd ult., commenced ft match at chess between the pliers of Hamilton and tho members of the Ngaruawahia Chess Club. There are four pUjcrs on each side, nnd each lius to play three games against the opponent selected by chance. Tuesday* and Thursday am each week huvo been selected for play (the games are played by telegraph.) As yet, only two games have terminated, one in iVnour of Hamilton, and tbo other in that of Xgaruawahia. It is hardly possible to forsee tho termination of a game at c'ioss, but we may with perfect safely predict that the result of the first round will bo two to twos. We have been requested to record thauls to the telegraphists who have volunteered their services, without which the contest could not have taken place. A laconic note appeared in our local columns the other day to this ell'cct : — "Sir, — I have di&uotcrud a goldiiokl 17 miles from Whangarei. lam George Fodcn, better known as Jack the Wheeler." Tho noto has tho merit of brevity ; there is no waste of words, tho statement is made without circumloeutioj, and some newspaper correspondents might occasionally with ndvnntngo emulate such n. st>le. H appears that " Jack tho Wheeler" has good reason for what he sa\«, and wo lune heard from sources that m.i\ bo ichcd on that there are good prospects of a large goldlield being opened in tho district named. As jet the fact* me not allo"cd to become public} but wij believe tho l'roiincial authorities are taking some action in the matter, and their opinion is said to bo that the roport of tho nun is to be depended on, and that his discovery is a very promising one indeed. — Crois. Yesterday the Italian corvette Vettor Tisani was thrown open to the public for inspection, and a lnrgo number of our citi/ons mailed themselves of tho opportunity of visiting the vessel, tho ferry steamers ami watermen's boats being well filled on cacti of their trips. The ofllcers and men on board the Italian vessel were unwearied in their attention to their visitor*, showing thorn ever) thing of interest on the vessel. The Vetlor Pisani was ccrluinh not m her best trim jesterdny for receiving visitors, ull being bustle on board preparing for her homeward voyage. Her decks were covered with stores of all kinde, live eat tie, eajks of beef, pork, ic. ; and tho grjuter portion of her crew were busily employed m-nding iails, fixing gear, ilc In her fitt'riii the orvette is very similar to our own men-of-war. She is a wooden ship, built, at Ven.ce m-lS7u\ auJ io of IUUO tons register. Her engiucs, male in the banie < .ty, nre <>l IO)-horso power, and are capable of driving the ship «t n speed of from 11 to 12 knots during fine weather. The will have for Venije tun Monlo Video, to morrow Cu^, Apul 2
On Tuesday cveumg Mr Lines ol Ngaruawalmi gave his annual entertainment alter hop-picking. There wero upwards of fifty persons present. Dancing wus kept up till the large hours in the morning. All vv ho wero present are enthusiastic in their expressions of pleasure ; wo can endorse their enthusiasm, a3 we have seldom spent a more pleasant evening. Everybody Parted with the intention of enjoying themselves unity is strength—unanimity on this occasion produced the di-bired result-hearty good-fellowship and enjoyment I We are glad to record the fact that the crop has proved remunerative ; the yield, although not so large asVill doubtless be the case m future jears, Umvcs a good margin fo r profit. Hop grow ing is an industry th.it is peculiarly fitted for the Wsrikato ; there is only one drawback, wo mean the difficulty of getting the crop gathered at the exact time necessary to secure perfection. Mr Lines has experienced the cordial co-operation of the inhabitants; it was pleasing to observe the old men, the females of all ages, tho joung men, and the young girls working vigorously, probably inoro to show their respect for the enterprising proprietor of the gardens than from a feeling thni they were helping to establish hop-growing as one of the principal industries of the country. A hop harvest in New Zealand to the original dwellers in Kent and Sussex recalls to their memory many a happy day passed in tiio old country, for winch all true British colonists feel the mo-4 hearty affection. We who ban* been for so inauy years in the colony, jet speak of Old England as home. We know that from England wo derive a'l our greatness ; except as an integral part of the British nation we should be as nothing in the eyes of the rest of the world. Wo have digressed somewhat, but our excuse must bo that it ia difficult to dissociate England from the hop growing industry. 1 Mr John Williamson purpo3e3 " stumping" it throughout the various outlying districts of the province re his candidatureforthconiccof Superintendent. He loft Auckland on Mon1 day far the Bay of Islands. As yet there are no other candidates in the field. Mr J. S. Macfarlano has been spoken of as likely to come forward, but there is no confirmation of such intention beyond a newspaper paragraph. If wo may jud^c from the number of additional claims to vote sent in to the various Returning Olucora, considerable interest is already felt in the forthcoming election. The following are tho v> eights for tho Autumn Handicap, to take place on the EUerslie Eacccourso on tho lith instant :— W. Walters'*, juu , Ben Nevis, lOst 71b ; J. Lennard's Bundaru, B=t 101b j Major Walmsley's Atlanta, Bst 21b ; J. Watt's Taraw hernia, 7st -lib ; J. Wutt's Ranger, 7st lib ; J. Mellison, jun., Marcclhi, 6st 101b.
