TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3. (From the Daily Southeex Cross.) petitions. Mr Bassett presented a pet it ion ' from certain settlers of Auckland who frequented the cattle market, requesting that, in casis where fchero was no hotel within half a mile of a market, a duly licensed innkeeper might by the payment of an annual sum be allowed to dispense refreshment. * Mr Gordon presented a petition from 30 . residents of Auckland in favour of the provisions of the Education liill relative to religious instruction in the public schools, and also a similar petition signed by 73 inhabitants of Auckland. Mr Dyer presented two petitions of a similar nature. BOAPS AND WO lOCS IX THE XOliTir. The Council proceeded to the consideration of bis Honor's Message No. 10, respecting the expenditure of £10,000 on roads works North of Auckland. Mr Lusk said, as the money was to be expended in particular portions of the province largely represented in the Council by anumberol'gentmenen with a considerable amount of local knowledge of those particular districts in which the works were proposed to bo carried out, the most speedy way of arriving at a conclusion on the subject would be to refer the question to the consideration of a select committee, to consist of those gentlemen thus interest. This bill was read a second time without further discuss- 1 ion, and the Council went into committee. On the motion of "Mr. Mitchell. Mr. Lundon's namo was added to tlte committed > Motion agreed to. EDUCATION 7!ILT,. This bill 'was further considered iu committee, Mr Douglas iu the chair, v ' Various oiailses were agreed fo with, trilling amendments. On the • 2Gth clause a long debate ensued. £This was the clauso which enforced direct taxation for education. —On the -motion of Dr Nicholsqm, the varying rate, according to 'the amount of rent of the house assessed, as proposed by the Goverment, was negatived, and an amendment. on the motion of Dr. Nicholson was substituted, making it obligatory upon every ocjupicr of a house to pay 20s. per annum irrespective oi' the occupier's means or the- size of house he occupied. ' On the question that the clause- as amended be agreed to being put, a division' took pluce with tlui following result: Ayos, 22 ; Noes, 11.
