Sittixo a>-d Staxdijtg.—A great hubbub l;as been made in Mew York about the tyranny to which, it is there alleged men are subjected in giving seats to the gentler sex. There never being a sufficient number of seats, men complain bitterly that when returning home tired they must yield their seats to ladies. "Can women 6tand" is the great question. Many have writ-tew saying they are quite willing to take only those seats which they may themselves secure, and they admit that men are pressed too much in the matter of politeness. A rather able vindication of men's rights come 3 from a woman, who says : —" Women can stand. They can- stand hours looking in at a shop window,, gazing at some lay figure robed in the latest Parisian fashion, often dragging their small children- by the hand ; or they can, without apparent fatigue, spend an hour in arranging a pound or two,- more or less, of artificial braids, curls, topsiea, &c. ; they can go iuto crowded assemblies and stand for hours at bridal receptions ; daace till midnight with their pretty feet. I say that woman can do all this, and more ; and it is odd that she cannot stand in a ferry-boat for five minutes. Let her take off her high-heeled boots, let her go into the fresh air and walk three or four miles a day, or go about her household duties in a real sober honest way, making the inmates of har home comfortab"e and happy; let her dress, in short, as a decent woman ought to do, not seeking tomake a dromedarv or a camtl of her. elf —then {ossiblyshe may be able to stand up in a ferry boat without being subject to all the 'physical disabilities unfel. b/ masculine humanity."
