Via Hokitika. London, October 24. The Cardiff Steam Coal Owners' Association have Jesolved to reduce the price of coal. At the London School Board meeting, yesterday, Reed, M.P., withdrew his motion, and Pieton's amendment was carried by 17 against 6. The Board will consider individually each case in which the child is recommended for gratuitous education. Consols, 92-J. Knatchbull-Huggesson lectured at Deal, yesterday, on "The Colonies, and their Government by the mother country," and insisted strongly on the necessity of cherishing the connection. The Duke of Argyle, Secrotary of State for India, is heartily co-operating with Lord Granville, Foreign Secretary, in the endeavours which he is making for the suppression of the Eastern slave trade. The papers are discussing the letters of Reed, late Chief-Consh u "tor of t Navy, and comparing the standstill policy of the Admiralty with the rapid advance of Continental powers. October 25. It is stated that the San Juan question has been decided in favour of America, and that the award declares the claims of America in accord with tho treaty of '46. The California harvest this year is the largest known Money less active. The Agricultural Bureau report for October shows tho wheat crop 5 per cent, increase over 1871, and and qualify imprved. October 26. Money scarce. Stock market recovering. First batch, of Tasmanian navvies lias been despatched. The Attorney-General, in addressing liis constituents ridiculed the idea of a Tory reaction. He defended the Admiralty against the attacks of Reed, late Chief-Constructor of the Navy, and said the colonies were never better affected towards the mother country, which would become the head of a large, and flourishing; federation. He spoke warmlv on the subject:, of American arguments advanced at Geneva. October 20, 7 p.m. Admiral Randolph succeeds Commodore Stirling en the Australian station. Large contracts for Australian meat have been made, deliverable in 1873.
