The Scandinavian Water-race shares are up to £50 Flour quiet, £113 per ton; wheat, ss. 4d. per bushel; malting barley, 6s. ; oats, 25.; oatmeal, £11 10s. Sales of good store cattle were made at S3 10s. to £4. Mixed mobs, 40s. to 50s. Complaints, are being made by the Pi-ess against the disgraceful state of the Supreme Court House. Arrived —Tararua, from the North; Swordfish, from Ilobort Town; Hydaspes, from London, with 171 emigrants. Saikxl —Tararua for Melbourne. New Plymouth, Friday. Mr Moorhouse has arrived by coach. Mr Crompton retires in his favour, and is uow canvassing for him. Hawera, Friday. Mr Ballanco addressed the electors lsst night, and received a vote of confidence. Major Atkinson followed, and received a vote of thanks. Both spoke in favour of the present Ministry. Mr Ballancc suggested that the settlers should agree to return the confiscated hmds to the natives, provided the Government insisted upon individualising their titles and receiving Crown grants, which would be a guarantee of security for tlie future. The proposal was applauded. Hokitika, Friday. The markets are fully stoeked and prices stationary. General dissatisfaction is expressed at the Ministerial announcement against the unification of the West Coast goldfields, because of the Canterbury debt. Christchurch, Friday. A company is being formed to lay down a tramway from Christchurch railway-station through the centre of the city to Papanui, on the Northern railway. The Otago Government has promised to subscribe £50 and Canterbury £100 towards the expenses of the proposed exhibition of flax machinery. The Auckland Government has proposed to bring the matter before the Provincial Council next session. Breadstuff's are languid. Wheat nominai, 4s 9d per bushel. Flour, difficult to move at £12 to £13. Barley entirely out of the market. Large quantities of potatoes ai-e to hand. Quotations are unaltered. Cheese, from 8d per lb. Bacon, butter, and hams unaltered. Beef, 30s per 1001b ; mutton 3£d to 4d. Wellington, Friday. A dejeuner has taken place on board the Nebraska, at which 200 persons sat down, mostly members of the Assembly, leading citizens and ladies. The Hon D. McLean proposed success and prosperity to the Nebraska, her officers, and owners. Mr Driver replied, and said there was every chance of a subsidy being granted, and in four months the line would be equal to any in the world. The Nebraska sailed South at five o'clock. Saturday. j The Phoebe has arrived from the North. j New Plymouth, Saturday. Mr Moorhouse has issued an address distinctly opposed to Mr Stafford's Cabinet. He thinks that the peace and good government of the country can alone be secured by the party in opposition. He has firm faith in Mr McLean's fitness for dealing with native affairs. He could not hope for the success of any attempt to combine with Mr Stafford and his associates. The Taranaki Herald states that either Mr Stafford or Colonel Whitmore had telegraphed, to Major Atkinson to be prepared to stand when Mr Stafford tabled his motion, although Major Atkinson denies coming forward as Mr Stafford's supporter. Greymouth, Saturday. Haseknayer opened with an immense house lastnight. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Bluff, Saturday, •The s.s. Rangitoto has arrived. She left Melbourne on Monday, September 16. Melbourne, September 16. The new amended land bill has been rejected by the Legislative Council. An education bill has been introduced which pro- ! vides for free, secular, and compulsory education. } The compulsory clauses enact, under penalties of ss. | for the first offence, aud £1 afterwards, that every child must attend school ten days in each month. The penalties to be recoverable summarily from parents. The second reading of the bill will take place on Tuesday week. The rush to Charters Towers continues, Numbers of miners leave by every steamer. The Darwin reefs also command attention. i The colonies have agreed to subsidise steamers i carrying messages between Port Darwin and Java, j during the interruption of the cable. Adelaide, \ Sydney, Melbourne, and Tasmania each bear a portion of the expense. Tenders have been called for steamers to perform this service, The steamship Northumberland, from London, arrived on September 16, after a sptendid run of 51 days. The Public Loan Bill has passed through committee in the Assembly Dr. Murray wiU either be prosecuted in Melbourne -or Sydney for the 'Carl' murders in the South Seas.

The Admiralty Court has given a verdict of .Cl.ftOO and costs against the Nevada, in the suit of the owners of the A. 11. Badger. The barque Lurline, from Call-io, reports the outbreak of another revolution in Peru. Genl. Aubine has been killed, and his body, with that of his brother, burned' on the piazza at Lima. Mr Pritchard, civil engineer, fell down the stairs of the Royal Hotel and was killed. A meeting of the A.S.N. Co,, wax held to consider the advisability of tendering for the California mail service. The meeting was adjourned for ten days, without coming to any decision. Great excitement has been caused at Newcastle, by the steamer Saxonia, which is under lien, being surreptitiously towed away. A half interest in. the Listowel opal mine was sold for £5000. At the Rand wick races the Derby Cup was won by Garon. The Metropolitan Avas won by Day worth, in 3min. 35 1 sec, the fastest time yet made. The Radwick Plate was won by King of the Ring. Adelaide, September 16. The prospects of the Darwin diggings are encouraging. Three thousand yards arc pegged out, and a number of claims taken-up. No alluvial has yet been discovered. The Government are sending out exploring parties, one eastward and the other west. Several new copper companies have been floated. The Garnaqueen, frem Newcastle, with coal, went ashore at Tipparra reef. The cargo and vessrl were insured. Wheat is dull. PARLIAMENTARY NEWS. The Auckland Temperance Hall and Mechanics' Institute Sites Bill was read a third time and passed The whole nig 1 t was spent in committee on the Otago Land Bill. In the Legislative Council, a bill to re-admit Mr Smythies to the bar was rejected by 21 to 7. Friday. The Stamp Act was further considered in committee, and progress wa3 reported to allow time for the preparation of an amendment, rendering it only necessary to have adhesive stamps cancelled by one party to any document. The new duties will commence from the first of December. The Protection of Animals Amendment Bill was considered in committee. An amendment of Mr Stewart's, to prohibit all duck-shooting in Otago fbr two years, was negatived. Friday Night. The whole night was spent in committee on the Maori Representation Bill. Mr Reynolds proposed an amendment to limit the duration of the Act to the present Parliament. This was strongly opposed and ultimately withdrawn. Mr Sheehan then moved as an amendment that the number of members be increased to seven. He intimated that the Auckland Provincial Government intended to introduce Maori members into the Provincial Council. After a long discussion Mr Sheehan withdrew his amendment, on Mr Stafford promising to introduce a measure to increase the number of Maori representatives, by dividing the present western district. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Friday Night. In the Legislative Council, Mr Hall's bill, giving Superintendents an ex officio seat in the Provincial Councils, was lost by 17 to 10.
