UNKNOWN "OMNE SOLUM FORTH PATRIA." THURSDAY,JULY 25,1872.
A xi'kaktctc at the opening of the Hnmiltc Flour Mill staled that the Maoris, in tl year 18. r >B, exported from tho Wuikato 7G,OC bushels of wheat. Tt is important that tlx fact should be as widely diffused as possibl as there is no district in New Zealand so litt known to the general public as this, which undeniably the garden of the Auckland Pn vince. Th« soil and climate nre capable < producing any cereal or fruit that can I grown in any other portion of this colon The great difficulty in the way of successfi farming, that of speedy /md cheap cotnmun cation with the markets, is about to be ovei come. The railway will, in all probabilit convey the first load of Waikato produc to the sea-board within eighteen months froi this date. No effort should be spared t those to whom immigration matters in th Province have been entrusted to mal the resources of this district known to tl class ot settlers we require, viz., the practici farmer with a little capital. We won! suggest that the terms on which land can 1 procured should be advertised thronghoi this and the neighboring colonies. It In long been found by men of business that t bave goods for sale and not to make tl tact known is equivalent to " lighting candle and putting it under a bushel." W are not aware that any effort in the abov direction has been made. On the completion of the railwav a mor favorable spot for the establishment of manu factories of all descriptions will not be founi in the colony. They could be erected in tin immediate neighborhood of coal-pits, ant as all are aware it is to the coal supply tha .England owes her supremacy as a manufac turing country. In addition to steam as j motive power there are numberless creeks ot sufficient magnitude for the driving oi machinery. A woollen manufactory is the one that naturally suggests itself. Within a year or two there will be enough raw material to keep a manufactory in full work. At the present moment there is a splendid opening for a brick-maker; there being plenty of suitable clay to be found on the banks of both our rivers. Ihe cost of a brick-making machine would be trifling compared with the large profit that would be certain to accrue. Our stock of timber suitable for building purposes is very limited ; in fact nearly all is imported at great cost from other places. If bricks! could be supplied at a moderate rate they,
woald be used for building 1 purposes instead of wood. The lirsfc cost would be greater, perhaps, bat this objection would be more than counterbalanced by the ...great*-- length of time the buildings would last. It is easily within the mean* of the settlers to form a company to prosecute this scheme and many others vyhich we shall suggest as they occur to us.
