S We do not necessarily endorse the opinions ex )_ pressed by our correspondents. J fTo the Editor of the Waibato Times.) Sir, — I have just made a trip along the new roadii course of construction by the Kirikii iroaUoad Board 1 This road will benefit the Government by openini . uj) a large extent of laud which has generally beei thought to be a dense swamp. I find there is a largi extent of dry land, and the swamps can be casilj > drained, there being plenty of fall. The road b] l; the east side of Lake Tuna, Whakapeka, througl i Hukanui will be a good road, but a long one, tht distance by it being about 25 miles from Hamiltor to Taupiri, and will yet require as much more spenl 3 upon it as has already been expended before it is airy e benefit to the district. I consider that the road 3 ought to have been._opened by the Government, as ] Road JBoards, being changed annually, the next , Board may abandon the course adopted by their predecessors and the work left unfinished. The Governi meat being non-resident and non-ratepayers are, of l j course, not likely to quarrel with the Board for de- ( laying. ( : Jonx liuXCIMAN. *
I 1 ■ I THE AUSTRALIAN HANDBOOK. j Circulars have recently been issued by Messrs. Gordon I and Gotcii, intimating that the fourth* annual publicaj tion of the " Australian Handbook and Almanac" will makeits appearance in the course of a fevr months. This Handbook, as hitherto published, includes a " Shippers' and Importers' Directory:" also a description of the several Colonies of Australia, their discovery, geography, climate, resources, and population, with statistical and other information for reference. For conciseness of | arrangement we have not seen a production cf the kind equal to it, though the index would have been more useful had it been fuller. As public attention in Europe is increasingly directed to the Australias, it is of the utmost importance, to intending emigrants and for the interests I of colonists, that such a work, should be of a trust- | worthy nature. In this respect the compilers have sought ! the latest and most accurate information ; and great at- | teniion has been given to the geueral arrangement. • The publication oi such a volume annually is probably i as important as that a Directory of a large city should ] be issued every year in order that the changes which ! naturally occur, especially in new communities, may be : duly noted. The edition now an sale contains the cor- j . rected time table of English Mails, with the dates car- 1 i ried through the calendar up to December, 1872. \A j | large and very carefully drawn Map of all the Colonies : accompanies the Handbook, particulars being obtained ; from the several Government maps, giving routes of ex- ' plorers, ic. In seeking public favour in the publication i fo. - the year 18i 3, Messrs. Gordon and Gotch announce j tuat, in addition to the Australian Handbook, there will ' also be Newspaper Directories for Australasia and the i British Empire, and that the Handbook will be iutro- j duced to all classes of the mercantile community, afford- : ing an excellent opportunity of publicity to advertisers. ■ The firm invite information to be sent to their estab- f lisnmeuts in London, Melbourne, or Sydney. ! i
