The Waikato Times "OMNE SOLEM FORM PATRIA" TUESDAY, JULY 23, 1872.

T)r. Jones, as will bo. seen by advertisement, will nttend at Hamilton, to-day, for the purpose of vaccina ing :ill desirous of taking precautionary incisures." We learn that he will s'lortly visit all Hie native settlements in order that the natives may bo enabled to participate iu the discovery of .leuner. A new pha.se in the life of medical men is being developed in this district. We were rather surprised whilst taking our "constitutional" to meet one of the disciples Of Ksculapius driving a heifer. He was armed with a stock-whip in one hand and a tortoiseshell lancet in the. other. We hailed him, l>tit could only extract the exclamation '"Ho you want. to be vaccinated." Tho annual meeting of the ratepayers of the Cambridge North Township was held at the Courthouse, Cambridge, on Friday, the li)th July, at noou. Mr. John llunciniau, Chairman of the Board, was called upon to preside over the proceedings. 'I he report of the outgoing trustees was read by the Secretary, which showtd oiiafc the Board was iu debt fo the extent of £S. —Mr. Selby thought that the Jjoard had laid themsulvoo open to censure by being in debt at the end of the financial year. lie stated that tho fact of the board having a deficiency would prevent any ratepayer from allowing himself to be nominated as trustee for the current year. The Chairman explained that the assets in hand in the shape of tools, <.Vc., more than compensated for tha liability of the Board. Tie also stared that the last being the first year of the Bond's existence a good deal of preliminary expense in the share of a plan • f the towns-hip, <iv., hail been incurred, which expense vouldnot again be necessary. After some further c!i;s ussion it was resolved that the report be adopted. •-■ On the moMon of Mr. H:\lly it was decided that the rate f<r the curreut year be one penny per ] o mil on the value to sell. - It was proposed by Mr iSelby that the foi'incr tiustees be re-appointed, viz., Messrs. Rnneiman, Hally, J\ob?'n*on, Pearson, and Captain Wilson, and carruel unanimously Messrs. fy'loy aud Campbell were appointed auditors. A v..te of thanka was passed to Mr. Comrie, for his gratuitous service in the valuation of the township acres. After passing a vote of thanks to the ehairin;iu. the meeting, which was very orderly throughout, separated. We believe that Captain McPherson is only waiting to receive lists of names of gentlemen wishing to join the proposed Waikato Tvifle Association from those to whom circulars have been sent in the various districts, to call a meeting and organise the association. We feel assured that nothing has more a tendency t«. promote good fellowship than frieiu'Jy ritie contests, or to bring out prominently all a man's best qualities, inasmuch that to be a good shot a m m must be tempt rite in all thing*, besides it gives j ;i man confidence in himself on going into the Held, : should Ave ever be called out in defence of our '-, " hearths and homes," and excites emulation iu at- : taining so laudable an object, and though onr repre- ! sentatives at the late Colonial Prize Firing did not ! by any means disgrace us, yet we may get better I men, and perchance have the honor of getting the I Champion Belt brought here at some future time. ] The annual meeting of the rate-payers of Kiri- j kiriroa district will bo held this day, at 2 p.m.

; The annual irieeting «»f nitcpayers of the Newcastle District place <m at the Delta i Hotel, Ngafniawahifc Mr Harris was voted to the chair, who opened th* proceedings by calling upon the Chairman of tiie outgoing IJoard to give a sta&tnent of the acc-»un|» tor the past year Mnjur 'Wilson said that I49Mfs hall, been collected,

The committee then proceeded to elect trustees for the current year. Eleven were proposed and ; seconded On a ballot being taken the following were declared by the two scrutineers (Messrs.Hume ! and J/mes) to be duly elected: Major Wilson, Messrs Hume, liyron, Johnson, an I Johns. Messrs. Inuea and James were appointed auditors. Major Wilson 1 moved a re olution " That the trustees be empowered to erect a p mnd, tiwl that a rate of Is Id per head I bu levied on all large cattle depasturing on the run, ,, Hcjouded by Mr. Hume. Mr. Martin moved a counter resolution. A ballot..was called which resulted in the original motion being carried. A ' vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. At a nice ting of the new trustees hold afterwards, Major Wilson was elected Chairman of the lioard.

The yearly meeting of tlie ra'epayers of the 1 (JiimbiiiY'o Highway Board was held at the lhike of Edinburgh Hotel, Cambridge, on Friday, the 19th I instant, at 2 p.m. There was a very large attend- ! aiicc of ratepayers, aud Mr Smith was called upon to occupy the chair.' After some diiiienlty in obtaining a secretary, Mr VV. J. Smith consented to ' perform the necessary duties pertaining to that office. The report of thu outgoing Trustees was read by their Secretary Mr J. D. KeynolcU, which stated : th:it after payment of all outskauding accounts there was a balmee remaining in the hands of the Treasurer of £44. Mr Forrest proposed that a vote of censure be passed upon tlie Trustees for tlie small result obtained from the money expended. Mr Forrest, in a speech of some length, enumerated tlie number of beneficial works carried out during this year in which lie was a member of the board, i and contrasted them with the small amount of work : which he stated had been done by the retiring board. ; lie condemned unsparingly the "mud and scrub ! .system" which he charged the trustees with liaviny

adopted, and pointed out its defects us compared with the use of gravel in road making." Mr Hugh Ciaig then addressed, the meeting at, considerable length regarding the water which he stated had been convoyed on to liis laud by Messrs Keyuolds, Clark, and iiogan, thus damaging hia property to benefit their own. It was then proposed as au amendment that the report be adopted, and ths motion aud amendment both having been duly seconded, the amendment was cirried. After some discussion it was resolved that the rate for the ensuing year be two pence per acre on all lands withiu the district. The election of a trustee was then proceeded with. About a dozen rate-payers were nominated to till the ollice of trustee, and the greater part of that number consented to stand. Messrs Martin and Pearson were appointed scrutineers. Several gentlemen handed in proxies, and proceeded accordingly to exercise them : but tbe general opinion of the ratepayers seemed to be that it was unfair for one or two to obtain proxies from absentees, and so swamp the votes of the resident owners, who, it was to be expected would be the best judges of the qualifications of the candidates for office. A smart passage of arms occurred between the Chairman and Mr Clark in reference to the use of a- large number of proxies held by the latter, and which the chairman stated he had no right to hand to a third party to exercise. This incident provoked a good deal of excitement, aud at one time a vow was imminent, but after expressions of "untruthfulness, dishonesty, &c" had been freely bauded about, the storm subsided ami the election was then proceeded with. At the close of the poll the following , were found to have the largest number of votes, and -,vere accordingly declared duly elected, viz. —Messrs J. (J. Reynolds, G. E. Uiark, John lluncimauii. VV. S. Brun&kill, aud W. ('. Wright. Messrs Smith and Selby were appointed auditors. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. C. Ceynolds for gratuitously acting as secretary during the past year, a compliment which that gentleman suitably acknowledged. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting separated

We are glad to learn that steps have been taken to get a new rope for the Ferry at Hamilton. It is hisjfh time it was on the ground, as the one in use at present is liable to snap at any moment. It would be a greab saving of wear and tear if the rope were suspended over the river instead of being immersed as at present. We think that about £'2(l or £30 would be well laid out in suspending it.

The great length to which the reports of the meean>;rj of the different Boards have extended has compelled us to hold over a considerable amount of interesting matter. The enlargement of the paper which will shortly. take place will prevent this leing the case in future.
