The Moanatairi has commenced crushing specimens; 1500 cwt of which ar« in hand. The Bright Smile crushing is also going on, and is showing well on the plates. Tauranga, Friday. The Southern Cross "sailed for Auckland this morning. The captain reports having found shelter at Motiti during the late gale. Wellington, Friday. Brogden's tender for the Taieri portion of the Dunedin and Clutha railway. It is to cost £142,000. It is rumoured that Kaye's washerwoman is attacked with small-pox ; but the report has not been confirmed. The Luna is to leave to-morrow for the Manukau for the purpose of embarking and conveying the Auckland members to Wellington. The Albion arrived at the Bluff this morning from Melbourne. Melbourne, June 29. The elections are in favor of the Ministry by 3 to 2. Bishop Gould has issued a pastoral dictating opposition, even to the shedding of blood. It is believed that this had an effect on the elections favorable to the Ministry. Father Corbett, in a political sermon delivered at St. Kilda, retracted all he had said, and sent a letter to the bishop to that effect. Telegraphic communication with England is almost completed; an interval only of 200 miles has to be bridged by horse express. A message from England to Australia was sent through in 8 days.
Sydnoy. In the Assembly tho Speaker ordered strangers out of the speakers gallery. It has been discovered that the bodies of the two criminals, Nicholls and Lester, were exhibited at a publio hous«.<: The undertaker has been prosecuted.
