NATIONAL SAVINGS
Riverton enjoys the unique distinction of being tho premier town in New Zealand in the third National Savings competition. This competition, which commenced a fortnight ago, is restricted to towns with a population exceeding 1000. With just short of 1100 accounts Riverton wins with 100 per cent, and the. National Savings Flag with the lettering “We Lead National Savings” will fly proudly from the Post Office flagstaff on all fine days during the next fortnight. A new competition commences next week, but the details are not yet known, but the Post Office staff have now so much faith in the generosity and patriotism of the Riverton population that they feel that they can win the flag again easily.
The number of residents in Riverton who have not yet opened -a National Savings account is so small that they yx>uld almost be counted on the fingers, and even these few are expected to be gathered in within the next few days. Fortunately many country residents are now becoming National Savers and accounts from this section of the community are coming in rapidly. Tfie Director-General of the General Post Office, Wellington, has sent bis congratulations to the local Post Office staff upon, their outstanding success. All the staff, and Mr Fitzpatrick in particular, have worked very hard to secure this distinction, of which Riverton may well be proud. Meanwhile the good work continues.
