A copy of a petition from Opotiki for endorsement by the Committee was received. Considerable discussion ioeik place whether to solicit weekly contributions instead of endeavouring to obtain funds from entertainments, and it was agreed to have both. Mr Mackenzie .suggested inviting a weekly donation from all households in the district, some more, some less, and it was thought that it would average out at about Is per head, or nearly £2OOO a; year. Reports were received from the correspondence committee (Mrs J. Fitzpatrick), from the school patriotic committee (Miss Mavis Frew), who said the girls had been busy collecting about 200 lbs of blackberries, which had been sold for about £5, and the proceeds used tto purchase wool, while Ron. Walker had been able to collect £lO from general odds and ends. They were warmly applauded. The secretary acknowledged donations that have previously been published, from the school, Mr R. Younger and from the Football Club. These were also received with applause. Tn dealing with the suggested voluntary it was agreed that every person in Riverton be invited through his employer to permit a collection of Id in the £1 from his salary or wages, to be contributed to the funds, and all others to contribute weekly aa much &s they could afford; that the town be devided into zones and collectors be 'appointed. Reference was ] made to the action that was being taken in the collection of donations from civil servants, and ifc was agreed that' the matter be referreidi 'to the Frovfoeial SQWSU
