DEATH OF WESTERN SONG.

Western Song (J. Morton) and El Caballo (T. Boyle) were sent out to jump a round o e ‘he steeplechase course at Riverton on Wednesday morning, but after jumping the sod walil in brilliantfashion West pm Song had to be pulled up and it was found that he bad fractured his near fetlock. The damage appeared to be done on the flat as he did not make any error at the obstacle. The Songbird gelding was at once destroyed. This was unfortunate for his connections as Western Song looked like winning good races over country and over hurdles this season. When first put to jumping be was rather an erratic customer, but both as "a hurdler and a steeplechaser be compiled a eonrirtont record. TTo was a winner over hurdles at- the Dunedin Cup meeting, while he also had a number of placings to his credit. He also won several races on the flat.
