LATE INCOME TAX DEMANDS.
EXTENSION OF PAYMENT DATE. WELLINGTON, March 3. Because of delays incurred in ' the . despatch of income tax demands by the department in Wellington, about 10 per cent, of the total number of taxpayers in the Dominion will obtain an extension of the date by which their tax must be paid. It was explained that on all the demands issued late the tax would be payable on March 6, and the 21 days' grace would end on March 27. An official of the Taxation Department in Wellington stated that the normal activities had been disorganized when the offices were removed to new quarters at Christmas and as a result the issue of some thousands of demands had been delayed. Many of these were posted on Tuesday and yesterday, "and ,'ifc was expected that the last of them would be sent by the end of the week. In some instances the persons affected had not waited t 0 receive their demands, but had already paid the tax/ - The number of taxpayers had increased this year, it was explained, and last year's total'of 117,000 was likely to be augmented by several thousands. Most people were now above the £2lO annual income level and were liable to be taxed for the first time. Some of these had failed to submit returns of j income and there had been a consequent increase in the internal checking by departmental officers. A time of changing incomes als 0 meant a general increase in this work.
