FURIOUS BAILING SAVES SHIP. STUBBORN STRUGGLE BY CHEW. ANCIENT SEALER TOWED TO HARBOUR. St. Johns (Newfoundland), Mar. 4. Captain John Babcock and his plucky crew of 131 won a stubborn struggle to save both the ship Ranger and themselves from the sea. They kept the vessel afloat for two days by furious bailing and the ancient sealer, which was reported last Thursday to be sinking in the Atlantic 15 miles from Jhe St. Lawrence, was towed safely to harbour tonight at Trepassey, 81 m««= south-west. of St. John's, by freighters Newfoundland and Imogene. Even then the captain . and the crew refused to leave the Ranger, although many fittings were jettisoned in the fight to keep her afloat.
