Western Star WALLACE COUNTY GAZETTE. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1938. UNFAIR TACTICS.

God help New Zealand if its meni»cr.v of Parliament are elected by a number of extremists of the Labour Party who constantly interrupted Mr Hamilton at his political address at Wairio on Saturday. last. It is a vyell known fact that the Labour members of Parliament are dictated to by labour organisations, particularly the . coal miners and watersiders.' As the result of the sacrifice of many of our hoys at the war the Government went in for immigration, and we have no hesitation in saying that a large number of people came out who will never make desirable citizens. There are two ways in which electors can vote on Saturday. They can do so according 1 to reason or ■■according to sentiment. One has only to look at the lavish expenditure of the. Labour Department to see the mariner in which corruption is being carried out with a view of securing votes. Only last week £4OOO was voted for expenditure alone in the Colae Bay district with a population of less than 100. It is easy to understand how long the Labour Government is Itikely to remain solvent with this expenditure. It has been estimated that the total ture required fo-r next year will amount ■ (n £45,587.000. The total collected in 1926-27, durimr the depression, was less than £17,000.000. How the taxation can he . kept up with the huge burden - of expense proposed by the Labnu- De- { pertinent is hard to visualise. While | manv old age pensioners are gladdened I by the promise that their pensions will < be'increased to 30s a, week on attaining the ago 0 f sixty years it wi|l take* this additional amount £q pay for the’ ;

increased cost of. liying,, which is steadily mounting up."/.' A suggestion was made the other day that New Zealand should follow America’s advice and only elect members of Parliament who. were horn in the country. Certainly New Zealand is rather young to adopt that principle, but we hope that more New Zealand bom will offer themselves for election in the years to come. At the present time > large proportion of our Government is made up of Australians who were strong supporters of the Labour Government in Australia. Judging by the way responsible elector’s have banded themselves together,to, fight socialism, there is every reason to hope and believe that the Labour Government will be heavily defeated at the polls on Saturday.
