WORLD'S RECORD TRAVELLERS.
Of the world's peoples, who are the greatest travellers ? It is an interesting question, to which there is no official answer. But a correspondent is inclined to plump for the New Zealanders as the winning one. His reasons are, first of all, that New are as much attached to the Old Country as the folk of Home. Secondly, they, one and all, have a desire to visit the Old Country, and do so if it is financially possible. Thirdly, the distance between New Zea- ! land anid the Old Country is> th e greatest in the world, covering as it does'zero tr the 180th meridian. Fourthly, in, covering vr. distance New Zealanders can vary their journey in an extraordinary number of ways. They can go hy the Cape, of Good Hope, by the Horn, by Aus- j tralia, India., and the Suez, by the Panama Canal, or by Australia and Canada »h. These are merely the main routes, and there are scores of subsidiary variants. It is calculated that over 8,000 New Zealanders reach an English port every year. This, with, the return, represents a minimum of 192;000,000 miles.of oversea travel. Truly £i stupendous total for a population of a little over a million and a-half,. If this record can be beaten, the correspondent wants to know by whom.
