COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting, of the Council held on Friday was attended «>y Cr s G Stroud (chairman), W T. James B C 'Horrell J. H. Smith, W. B. Hopcroft', F. J Linscott, W. .1. A. McGregor and-D. Teviotdale. The chairman referred to the death of Mr. Wra. Macaliscr who had been legal adviser to the Council for many ] years. A motion of condolence was j carried in the usual manner. j —Correspondence. — Philp and Dickson applied for permission to open the dram in front of Fairfax hotel.—Granted The Automobile Association, asked ji the Council would give favourable consideration to the matter of erecting Hood poles that are required on section of road liable to flood in the vicinity of Aparima River bridge on RivertonOtantau road. If Council will place poles in position the Association will have them painted.— Application granted. A. C. Wadsworth, Riverton, offereu 15s fo r manuka and 5s per year grazing right on quarry reserve. Wards Road. Longwood —Granted. S. W. J. Peterson, Waipango, asked to ' have' something done to Armstrong's and Peterson's road.— Gravelling to be carried out. Adjoining ratepayers to be notified to clear g.orso from load line. Commissioner of Transport wrotethat he will be. pleased to recommend classifying in Class three of LindsayCalcium highway, and suggested that Mossburn-Five Rivers Illan highway No. 291 (60 chains) and Riverton-The 'Rocks main highway No. 293 (16 chains.- . be included. —Recommendation accepted. , , Mrs J. Rolamdson, Riverton, asked if Council will give a right to pitch a tent for a camp on, back roads for use on the occasion of the Centenary provided Miners' Rights were obtained— Council had no power to grant right. Jas Lynch, Otautau, applied to be giveri laccess to his section known as Child's.—Loft to Member and Engineer A. A. 'Officer, Wrights Bush, Gladfield R.D., applied -for permission to plough roadside adjoining his property. —Granted-

G. W. Kerr, Isla Bank, applied for permission to plough roadside adjoining his property.—Granted. H.. Pearce, Otaliu, Secretary Waiau Branch of the Farmers' Union, asked that Council request the surfaceman to discontinue the practice of depositing large stones on roadsides, and also if Council will remove those already deposited there, as horse traffic is now responsible for horse traffic being confined to the roadsides. —Surfaceman instructed to remove stones.

G. W. Amos, Tuatapere, wrote that he is prepared to pay sa small rental for use of that part of a. disused road adjoining his section. —Declined. G. and 10 others petitioned Coun.cil to attend to the Gorge Creek either by erection of a bridge or culvert. —Left to Member aud Engineer M. McLeay Otah-u, applied to have the bush cleaned of the road giving acce ss to his property.—Work to be done. J. G. Johnston, Nightcaps, applied for permission to plough roadsides adjoining to his property.—Granted. J H. A Blatch made application for license fo r slaughter house situated at Lynwood.—Granted. District Engineer, N.Z. Railway?, pointed out that straying cattle have 'been a source of danger to -Tiariiivay trair.s. —Dee'ded to -notify rangers to take action to stop straying of cattle. Or Smith said the late Cr Horrell was .a. very old member of the Council, and he moyed that a photograph of deceased, be hung 'n the Council Chambers.—Seconded by Cr McGregor and aurit'd. . On the motion of Cr IL.rrell it was decided to ask the Railway Department to improve the railway crossing at Hirsts. Accounts aniiiiiiiiiiir t» £346i 15/were passed for payment. —Order Paper.— Councillor Smith moved that the following amount be voted for expenditure in Waiau riding: Main Papa.totara road maintenance gravelling £25; Paipatotara Settlement road maintenance gravelling £75; total £ICO.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr J. G- C. Baker) reported that during the fine weather road surfacing ],as been kept up. The office staff has been, engaged on the proposed Otautau-Pourakino road leading to Messrs Thomson and McKeiifiie.'s new sawmill stie. —Report adopted.
