BADMINTON

ANNUAL MEETING OF RIVERTON CLUB. The annual meeting of the Riverton Badminton Club was held in More’s committee room last evening when there was a fair atentdence. Mr M. P. Lyng, president, occupied the chair. Tho annual report and balance-sheet were read, and adopted. In presenting th e second annual report of the Club the chairman (Mr Lyng) stated that the committee was pleased with the state of th e Club, and tegarded it in every respect as eminently successful. The membership at the end of the previous season numberid 37, of whom 13 were non-play in ir members. The number of members at the close of last season’s activities was 36, all of whom were active players. Thus it will be seen that the membership had been increased bytwelve. Realizing that the Club, as a whole, desired as many matches as could be arranged with other Clubs, the uommitte e carried out engagements with the Otautau, Waianiwa Spar Bush and Wellesley Clubs). A fixture with Hr. and J. Smith’s had been planned, but, owing to many unforseen circumstances, it was regretted that it did not eventuate. The 1935 season was begun with a clean sheet. The 1936 season concluded with a credit of 9s 6d there being one outstanding account amounting to 19s 6d. During the past year the, committee had made every endeavour to provide equipment well up to standard, but it must be admitted that the expensive material of the past season did not bring with it service commensurate with the extra cost-. Added to trliis was the severe strain placed on tho Club’s finances by the large number of home matches which invari ably showed a l"Ss of fimn 7s 6d to 10s d match. It is felt that the Club must seriously consider at- some near future date, the setting up of a committee to deal thoroughly with all matters relating to the financial position of the Club. While it may not be regarded a s a sine qua non that a relatively large credit balance should be shown yearly, it is obvious that there must be some provision made for the meeting of expenses resulting from inter-club matches. Tile successful functioning of the Club had been due almost entirely to the splendid services reuded by the treasurer, Mr Norman Thomson, and the secretary, Miss D. M. Galloway, and the committee extends its thanks to all who had assisted; to further the interests of the Club. The following office-bearers were elected for phe ensuing year : President—Mr M. P. Lyng. Secretary—Mr G. D. Stewart. Finance Committee —Messrs J. J. Banks, D. Cassels and W. De Clifford. Club Captain—Rev Father Henley, Auditor —Mr A. Dooley, Selectors, —Miss Galloway Rev Father Henley and Mr J. J. Banks. General Committee—Misses W. and M, McKinnon, P. MacDougall, Messrs I. Cook, F. Stentpn and R. Jolly. Subscriptions were fixed at 5s and 6d nightly. It was decided to open the season on Thursday. April 30th when invitations would be extended to other Clubs to be present.
