EX-CONVICT’S "VOW.”
A Japanese named Sosuke Kakubari has worked out a peculiar method of individual protest against what h e regards as the injustice of society. He has taken a vow to get himself convicted by the courts 20 times before he reaches the age of 60 (he is now 51') and then to commit suicide .“in a novel way.” Kakubari was found guilty of some minor offence and sent to prison for two months in 1898. He then resolved to lead an honest life, but, according to his own story, found that all doors were closed against an ex-convict. He then, decided to resort to a career of deliberate crime, with 20 convictions and hara-kari as the final goal. Kakubari has already succeeded in procuring 11 sentences, and is in line for a twelfth, since he has just been arrested when he was leaving one of Tokio’s large department stores with three stolen kimonos under his arm.
