ROMANCE OF MAN ON BAIL.
MARRIED CHIEF WITNESS. It was revealed at a Cardiff court recently that • a man awaiting, trial had married a young woman who was the principal witness in one of the charges preferred against him. In the dock were Rowland George Robertson, aged 22, labourer, and Patrick, Blake, aged 26, seaman. After they had pleaded guilty to two charges of housebreaking, a detective stated that Robertson had confessed to four other burglaries, while Blake had admitted taking part in two additional burglaries. Counsel for the prosecution said it had been decided to withdraw one charge owing to the difficulty of obtaining evidence. During the period he was awaiting trial he married the chief witness in the case. A considerable quantity of stolen property had been recovered, but a large amount was. still missing. The detective added that Robertson j was granted bail by the magistrates so that he could be married. He promised to keep out of mischief, but he abused the confidence reposed in torn- by m " dulging in housebreaking. Blake, the officer mentioned, had been sentenced m America to five years in a State reformatory for a hold-up and robbery. He had several other convictions. Blake was sentenced to twelve months and Robertson to ten months' hard labour.
