A message from Warm Springs (Georgia) states '■ that as the last offi-cial-act of a - fortnight’s holiday there Mr Roosevelt to-day extended Executive clemency ..to a" prisoner whom he saved from a death sentence fifteen years ago while Assistant Secretary for the Navy. Gus Menefae, formerly a naval enlisted -man, who ; was found guiltv of killing a petty officer during the World War, had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment in 1918 and to-day was. set free.

Satchell, wireless operator of the Deebank, homeward bound from New Zealand, ran to the wireless room and stood in his pyjamas with the temperature at nearly, freezing point intercepting messages from the Spanish steamship Gloria, in distress in Cardigan Bay., The Deebank rescued the crew of 26. The Gloria was reported late at night to be drifting in flames and was a danger to navigation.
