SOUND POSITION INCREASE IN NET REVENUE. RETURNS TO MAY 27. AUCKLAND, Juno 15 An increase in the net revenue of £951 is revealed in the preliminary figures of the financial operation of ihe railways for th« lour-weekly period ended May 27.' The returns which were made available by the chairman of the Railways Board. Mr H. Sterling, show that the revenue for the period was £484,993 against £484,082 in the corcsponding period last year. The favourable balance was 'created by further decreases in expenditure, ihe total for the period being £404,603 against £406,465, thus leaving a revenue increase of £951. For the first two periods of the financial year from April 1 to May 27, the revenue totalled £976,561 compared with £1,007,766 last year. The expenditure aggregated £787,418 against £826,551 showing an increase in the net revenue for the period of £7928.
A CUTTING .RETORT. Two young women, evidently strangers to each other, were seated at J the same table in one of London's popular restaurants. One of them had finished her lunch, the other was about to begin. The girl who had finished sat back : n her chair and lighted a cigarette.
