RIVERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Borough Council held its final meeting for tne year last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor (Dr Trotter) and C'rs A. E. Willett, Jus Hymers, W. Ashley and Jas Preptice. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Patrick and Martin, Jno. A. Guise and A. Evans drew attention to the outfall drain fronting their properties. They were prepared to pay half cost of pipes for draining.— Or Ashley said lie had been interviewed by the applicants, but had been informed by the Clerk that .the Council had no power to contribute to wards'the cost of a drain within one hundred feet of the estuary.—Cr Willett said .Guise’s property was more than one hundred feet and . he considered if Guise paid half the cost J of pipes and labour the Council should 9 do its share. —The Clerk stated that the ratepayers could form a drainage area.— The suggestion was made by His Worship that the matter *be referred to the Works Committee. —Cr Ashley moved that the application be granted as suggested by Cr Willett.—Cr Hymers said they were forming a bad precedent in granting this application, and it was certainly against the Act. —To comply with the Act it was resolved that the applicants pay for 100 feet each and , the Council should do the balance. The Public Works Department, Invercargill. wrote re carrying electric wires over the new traffic bridge. The cost of taking the electric wires over the new structure would have to be undertaken by tha local bodies. —His Worship said he had waited on the Power Board in regard to the electric light and the matter could come before the next meeting of the Board.—lt was decided to communicate with the Public Works Department when the Power Board had dealt with the matter. The Treasury Department, Wellington, wrote re sanction for Harbour Redemption Loan of £3ooo.—The Clerk stated that efforts had been made to have this sum transferred to the Bridge Loan account, but’they had not been successful. Southland Electric Power Board wrote asking the Borough to send Power . Board rates direct to the Board, owing to the increased percentage charged by the Banks for remitting same »o the Board.—To be attended to. The State Forest Department asked for a return of timber planted, by the Borough Council.—To be informed that no trees had been planted. The Public Works Department forwarded motor lorry regulations and book let classifying roads in the various dis-tricts.—-Received.

Mr Davis had aljjo beeh interviewed in regard to erection of Wite netting.—Referred back to Committee with power to act. Cr Willett said notices should be posted to prevent'carters taking sand from the foreshore, South Rifefton. The foreshore was being spoiled as the result. —It was decided to erect a notice that sand could not be removed without permission of the Council. If sand could be obtained further round they should prevent it, or charge a royalty.—lt Was resolved that 1/- per yard be charged royalty, the money obtained to keep the place in order. Cr Willett drew attention to the growth of broom and igorse at the corner of Richard Street. A motor accident had occurred there recently.— To be attended to.

Cr Ashley reported that the new pa-ivies had been completed in South Riverton.

Accounts amounting tc £95 18/* were passed for payment His Worship said that- a good deal of work had been - carried out during the year with the limited funds at their disposal. The next important,ivork was the commencement of the new bridge. There liad been a good deal of preliminary work in connection with . the new structure and the council would have to' consider the financial aspect shortly. As they were no doubt aware there Was only a certain sum available for wt fk in the Borough and they had done the best in the interest of the rat? viycrs. As the festive season would shortly be begun he concluded by wishing the Councillors and Staff a Merry Christmas and .prosperous New Year. The Councillors present responded and expressed the wish that His Worship and family would enjoy the Festive season.
