WHY BRITAIN WOULD FIGHT
‘I would like it to be understood that there are only two. things for which this country would 1 fightj’ said Viscount Gr a y, in a recent speech. ’One is if wei were actually attacked, and the other is for the settlement of difc£>u|tet3 jpeaic|efu[lly. In other words if we went to ( war at all- under the Locarno Treaties or anything else,. it would not be to defend a particular frontier, to help a particular country; it would be simply to. stand up for the prin cipie of the covenant of the League of Nations. We cannot help the peace of the world by saying that in no circumstances shall we take forcible action on’ behalf of the covenant of the League. I am very strongly in favour of saying we won’t go fcoi war for anything! ©lie than that, and! the question of who ajre our allies being decided solely upon the queis/taon of who) is for a peaceful, settlement and who is against it.’ ■ ■ . ,
