An inquiry was held into the death 'of Gavin McKenzie, aged 21- years, who was murdered by Edward J. Hay, aged 18 years, at the farm of Mr McKenzie, near Masterton. It would appear that the child was playing with the lad in a paddock, and did not return. A search was made for the child, byt, in the meantime the lad procured a gun and practicall}' blew his head off. The child was later found with its head split open. Hay was an industrial school boy, and had been working for McKenzie for two years. There was no accounting for the tragedy, except that the lad was not of normal intelligence.
