CLIFDEN RACES.
The difdeu_ Racing Club were favoured with ideal weather for the , annual race meeting, the slight showers of , the previous night making travelling pleasant. The picturesque course is reached by two main roads, one from Otautau, and the other from • Tun tap ere, and; both are delightful journey’s through varying scenery. It was a great and unusual sight to witness the long line of cars at intervals wending their way down the circling road through Orawiai and Merrivale, and with few exceptions, were there any stoppages for repairs. To many it was the first visit to difden, "and one and all were enamoured with the scenery which enhanced the setting of the delightful course. The attendance consisted chiefly of the residents of the district, and in many cases whole families were represented, the terraces being dotted with family picnic parties. The proceedings were enlivened by the vigorous playing of the Tuatapere Pipe Band under Major Dickson. The racing was at times most exciting, and in (two instances there were ’dead heats. Mr S. Fowle, the worthy President, and his officials worked well, while Mr E. Mathieson was an efficient secretary. The totalisator returns amounted vo £3BBO, as compared with £2270 in 1917. The races resulted as follows: Lillburn Plate, £35. Six fuidongsi —(1) Breton 8.7 (A. McKay) and (2) Sartolite 8.2 (S. Gibbs) deadl heated for first place ; (4) Glenaret 8.124 (J. McCliesney) 3. Six others started. It was a great contest between the leaders. Time, limn 17 3-ssecs. Orawia Steeplechase Handicap, £SO and trophy valued £5. About two miles.—(l) Frog 10.0 (T. O’Oounor) 1; (4) Sultana 10.6 (Mr North and J.. Callaghan) 2. Also started —(2) Peerless 10.11 (P. Willis), (5) Fair Play 10.0 (J. McChesney), (3) Wilden Loch 10.0 (G. Fielding). There was a chapter of accidents during the race, only two horses finishing. Time, smirn 18 secs.
Tuatapere Handicap Trot (saddle) £65. .One mile and a-bal'f.—(2) Minim, 12yds bhd (E. J. Dwyer) 1; (3) Guy Wild, limit (T. ©‘’Connor) 2; (5) Greenhorn, limit (B. Berry) 3. Six others started. A good race between the leaders. Time, 3min 65sec. difden Cup Handicap, £IOO and trophy £5 ss. One mile.—(3) Mettle Drift, 8.12 (J. O’Neill and (4) Pallah, 8.0 (g. Gihbsi) tied for first place; (1) Martifors, 9.7 (W. Robinson) 3. Also ran—(2) Bright Spot, 9.2 (A. MdKay). A great race. Time, linin 44 4-ssec. Waiau Steeplechase Handicap, £IOO. Trophy valued £5 ss. About 2\ miles. —(2) Glenisla, 10.10 (E. Ellis) 1; (1) Heatherlea, 11.8 (G-. Fielding) 3. Glenisla made the running throughout and won by a dozen lengths. Heatherlea was lame on pulling up. Time, 6min. 42 4-ssecs.
Alton Handicap Trot (saddle), £65. Two miles.—(2) Greenhorn, limit (R. Berry) *1; (3) Guy Wild, limit (T. O’Connor) 2; (1) Princess Cole, 132yds bhd (E. J. Dwyer) 3. ; Three others started. The favourite broker .her hopples after catching the leaders. Time, smiu.. 17 3-ssecs. Ladies’ Bracelet, -.£50. First £37 and bracelet valued! £lO, second bracelet £B, third bracelet £5- 1 mile and! a-quarter.—(3) Breton, 11.2 (Mr J. Langford) 1; (2) ; St. Cloths, 10.7 (Mr B. J. Ellis) 2, (1) Dunmure, 10.13 (Mr J. Taylor) 3. Carmelite,- Kia Tupato and Sartoval also started. Won by about three-quarters of a length. Time, 2min. 20 3-5. Farewell Handicap, £6O. One mile. —(4) Sartolite, 8.4 (S. Gibbs) 1, (2) Mettle Drift, 9.4 (J. O’Neill) 2; (1) Post Haste, 9.11 (A. McKay) 3. Glenareb also l ran. Won by Tour lengths. Time Imin. 30 4-ssecs.
